This is a guest post from AoM reader Jason Mills. I can remember visiting my best friend when I was younger. It was fun to get together and have adventures like boys do, but one thing I really, really liked was his dad. His dad was an old farm man and looked like it from the weather-beaten lines on his face to his calloused hands. He was quiet spoken and loved smoking his pipe. Since my dad was a non-smoker, this fact really intrigued me as a young boy. He always smelled like pipe tobacco Sir Walter Raleigh and now, whenever I smell that brand, I always think of him.
History of smoking
For hundreds of years, through a network of slaveholders and plantations, enslaved Africans and their American-born progeny harvested great wealth from Southern sugar, cotton and other cash crops. Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Ala. Population is 90, and Today, the South remains largely poor, and ancestors of the slaves who built this nation remain there in large numbers.
In Africa, for example, archaeologists have discovered smoking pipes made of bamboo, horns, and earthenware dating from the 13th century. Throughout the Middle Ages, the bamboo bong gained prominence in Asia and spread from Thailand to China.
Recently, one of the members of our team quit smoking and noticed a strange anomaly. He began to have extremely odd dreams. One of the dreams was of him turning into a dragon and battling Voldemort a character from Harry Potter. The others were just as strange, and for 2 to 3 weeks he continued to have nightly weird dreams.
Eventually, the intensity of his dreams subsided, but as his dreams quelled my curiosity grew. I decided to do a tad bit of research a quick google search on the matter. Low and behold this is a well-documented withdrawal symptom from smoking cessation, and was actively talked about in forums, blogs, and detox websites. Although, the cause for these flood of vivid dreams has not been researched I wanted to test it out for myself. I quit smoking and had some dreams that my friends double-crossed me, that my dog could fly, and even a dream where I smoked with Justin Bieber.
I went into this experiment with a positive attitude and looked forward to dreaming every night. It was almost like a psychedelic trip every time I slept, literally anything could happen. After a week though my dreams subsided and I resumed my smoking. My recommendation for those who stop smoking is to mentally prepare yourself for these dreams and look at them in a positive light.
Obviously, some dreams can be terrifying, but more times than not I had some pretty crazy dreams that I really enjoyed.

Artifacts as time markers Pipe stem dating The clay pipe industry expanded rapidly as tobacco smoking gained popularity in both England and America. Historical archeologists excavating English colonial sites often find pieces of white clay smoking pipes on their sites. In the s J. Harrington studied the thousands of pipe stems excavated at Jamestown and other colonial Virginia sites, noticing a definite relationship between the diameter of the pipe stem bore—or hole—and the age of the pipe of which it had been part.
This change in diameter may have occurred because pipe stems became longer through time, requiring a smaller bore. Louis Binford later devised a mathematical formula to refine Harrington’s method Deetz

Paul Berry After building the product for Huffington Post, and owning the product and engineering groups at AOL after we were acquired, it was clear to me there was a huge gap between what the current CMS offering gave the world and what the world needed. Five years later we are at scale, moving the needle and doing to WordPress what Airbnb did to Craigslist. Social and Centralized WordPress, Drupal, and the custom CMS solutions of the world are all independent, non-connected instances that each need to be updated individually.
There are over 87 million instances of WordPress alone in the world, and each security upgrade, feature update, and every other single thing has to be updated for each site individually. By contrast, RebelMouse is a social, centralized platform built to keep up with the speed of the tech giants. Our updates are pushed out to all of our sites at once and sometimes even multiple times a day with content creation tools integrated directly into social APIs.

The middle classes were eager to enjoy this new pastime as well.

Guide Alfred Dunhill began to manufacture briar smoking pipes in ; the famous white spot first appeared on top of the hand-cut vulcanite mouthpiece in in order that the customer should know which part faced upwards. At about this same time a one year guarantee against defects was offered on the bowl of each pipe, and to insure against far older Dunhill pipes being replaced under this guarantee a simple dating code, showing the year of manufacture, was devised and stamped onto each pipe bowl.
This code is still in use today. Over the ensuing years great interest has arisen over the “mystique” of the Dunhill pipe in general and the dating code in particular. Pipe collectors, especially in America, pride themselves on having acquired Dunhill pipes in prime condition which were made in the ‘s, ‘s and ‘s.
Some collectors strive to acquire only those Dunhill pipes made between when Dunhill stopped buying bowls turned in France in favor of those turned in London at the newly opened Dunhill bowl-turning facility and the year of Alfred Dunhill’s retirement. Consequently, much confusion has arisen over the dating code because it has not been standardized over the years, and seemingly minor differences in the code can mean a difference of years, even decades, in the manufacture of the pipe.
Adding to this is the fact that the firm has used a great many special stampings depending on what part of the world to which their pipes were destined, and that sometimes these stampings or codes were used for only three or four months duration. Leading to even greater confusion is that many pipes were simply stamped incorrectly; at times one part or another of the code is not to be found on a given pipe. Taking all this into account it should not be surprising that the original and complete dating code list, in possession of the firm’s archivist at 30 Duke Street, is some twenty eight pages long.
